Being Well

All sorts of chronic illness runs in my family from diabetes and cancer to autoimmune disorders and more.   It took me a long time to realize that if I wanted to avoid these preventable diseases and live a long, healthy life, I needed to make some changes.  The first thing I needed to do was to prioritize my own health and wellness rather than focusing on taking care of everyone else first.  Don’t get me wrong, I love taking care of others, but think of it like when the flight attendant tells you to put your oxygen mask on first before helping anyone else on with theirs.

If you don’t live a lifestyle of prevention now, you may become that person on the airplane who didn’t put her oxygen mask on first.  How will you be able to take care of others if your health is failing?

It may not always be easy to think about living a lifestyle of prevention when our own health care system focuses more on disease and masking symptoms.  In Eastern medicine, people go to their doctors regularly and work with them to prevent disease and get to the root cause of an illness.  Over there, doctors are really more like wellness coaches.  Don’t get me wrong, we need our doctors and modern medicines, they save many lives; but it’s time to start working with our doctors to help us find natural, more holistic alternatives.

According to the CDC, chronic disease, much of which is preventable, accounts for 75% of the $2 billion spent on healthcare in the US each year.  That comes out to around $5,300 per person.

Less than $10 is spent per person on preventative healthcare in the US.

But YOU can make a difference in your own life through positive lifestyle changes – essentially, getting rid of bad habits and replacing them with more positive ones, including incorporating more holistic approaches to health care.
