CHAI TEA RECIPE with Essential Oils
I recently gave up coffee and I’ve been doing pretty well with the exception of my morning sweet tooth. I can do without the caffeine, but I do miss the creamy sweetness of a good cup of Joe.
Over the last week, I’ve been drinking tea instead of coffee and at a local coffee shop here in Eureka, CA I ordered an earl grey tea latte today. It was delicious and a lightbulb went off.
It took me back to India last year where every chance I got, I would stop at one of the various Chai vendors that popped up on the street. There I would stand amid the crowd, sipping Chai out of stainless steel cups.
Now I know what you’re thinking…Earl Grey and Chai are two very different flavors. But the truth is, Earl Grey is just black tea, and Chai is just black tea stewed with milk and spices like cardamom, cinnamon and black pepper.
So back to the light bulb…
Chai Tea Recipe with Essential Oils
I love Cardamom and now I have it in an essential oil which means that I now have access to all the flavors required to make my own Chai Tea Latte!
This was super simple and super delicious, and comes with all the therapeutic benefits that each of the oils in the recipe give us. Plus, while sipping this Chai, you will breathe in the aromas of the oils and find that they may boost your mood and calm your mind!
The best part is, using essential oils instead of dried herbs, you’ll get up to 80% more flavor and potency.
- 1 drop cardamom essential oil
- 1 drop cinnamon essential oil
- 1 drop black pepper essential oil
- 2 drops wild orange essential oil
- 12 oz water
- 12 oz milk or milk substitute (I like hemp milk)
- 2 bags black tea
- 1-2 Tbs honey or agave, amount depends on how sweet you like it. (I like to use stevia, which is much sweeter, so use a tiny amount, maybe 6-8 drops of the liquid stevia).
*Note: you can add 1 drop ginger essential oil, however you’ll need to adjust the amounts for cardamom, cinnamon and wild orange as ginger cuts their flavor. Begin by adding 1 more drop of each and go from there.
Boil the water and add the tea bags, allow to steep for 3-4 minutes. In a separate pan, warm the milk over medium heat. If you have a a milk frother, use it at this time to create the foam for the ‘latte’ part, otherwise, just pour the warm milk in to the steeped tea. Then add the essential oils and sweetener of your choice. Mix well.
