3 Little Known Self-Care Secrets for Anti-Aging Skin

If you want to look and feel your best for the long-haul and prevent premature aging, then self-care should be your number 1 priority. In fact, self-care tops out at number one in my list of the top 8 boundaries a multi-passionate female entrepreneur must set to ensure success.

Not only is self-care your ticket to thriving wellness for mind, body, soul, and business, it may also help with anti-aging and keep your skin younger looking too (#nofilter needed for all those Zoom meetings and livestreams)! 

Of course there are the obvious good self-care/skincare/anti-aging habits like sunscreen, not smoking, drinking plenty of water, exercising, avoiding excessive alcohol use, not having kids (hardy har har)…

There are also a few lesser known self-care secrets you can focus on to prevent looking older beyond your years and to keep your confidence, energy and focus up so you can conquer the day. 

1. Avoid or Manage Stress

Easier said than done, amiright? I promise there are a few simple things you can incorporate to help with stress, but first, let’s go over how stress can prematurely age you.

It often seems like stress is an unavoidable part of life. But new research indicates that long-term chronic stress can actually lead to…

  • Premature aging of the cells (hello wrinkles and aging skin),
  • Memory loss (focus and concentration be damned!)
  • Weakened immune system (no sick days for boss moms, amiright?)
  • The hormones released with constant stress may also put you at risk for high blood pressure and compromised hearth health (hello low energy and feeling tired when you’re trying to get $#it done).

Heart, brain, and immune health aside, at the top of your list of things to protect should be the factors that contribute to confidence and productivity in your business. 

What contributes to confidence and productivity in your business? 

Having a complexion that makes you say “Damn, I look good!” AND sustained energy levels that keep you focused on the task at hand throughout your work day so you can prioritize and get $#it done.  

Simple ways to avoid or manage stress

  • Walking meditation to quiet the mind

Meditation doesn’t have to be done sitting on a pillow on the floor. You can go for a walk outside and meditate while walking. Do this alone so you won’t have any interruptions. It’s as simple as concentrating on the movements and sensations of your body as you walk. Walk at your normal pace and do it in a way that feels natural to you. 

Concentrate on how your foot comes up off the ground to take the step, how it comes down, the shifting of your body weight forward as the back foot comes up off the ground. As you’re walking try to focus your attention on sensations in and around you that you would normally take for granted such as how breathing feels as you inhale and exhale, sounds your body may create as you walk, sights your eyes take in as they focus on the world in front of you.

It’s ok for your mind to wander. All you have to do is bring your attention back to focus on one of those sensations. 

Do this whenever you’re feeling stressed during your day. You can even do this type of mindfulness practice while you’re getting in your run or while doing your laundry. The simple act of concentrating on the sensations within and around you will help to manage your stress or even avoid it altogether because you’ll be in a better mindframe.

  • Box Breathing for calming stress and feelings of anxiousness

This is a simple, quick, and effective way to calm you down and get you into a better state of mind in less than two minutes flat! This can be done at your desk, in the airport, while stuck in traffic and late for an appointment, on your way to teach a workshop, or before hopping on Zoom with a difficult client. Keep this in your back pocket and pull it out whenever you’re feeling stressed or anxious. 

How to do Box Breathing

Breathe in quickly through the nose to fill the lungs to a count of four. Hold for a count of seven. Breathe out slowly through the mouth to a count of eight. Repeat this four to five times. 

If you want to enhance your breathing, I suggest placing a drop of a minty or citrus oil in your palms, rub your palms together, cup them over your nose and mouth, close your eyes, then breathe in and out deeply a few times from your palms before doing the Box Breathing. 

  • Use natural solutions for calming stress and feelings of anxiousness

My favorite way to de-stress, feel more grounded, and calm feelings of anxiousness is through aromatherapy. I like to use a diffuser with essential oils or breathe in the oils from my palms throughout the day. Trust me, run a diffuser wherever you find stressful situations and you can calm down an entire room of people. They won’t know what hit ‘em. 

How does aromatherapy work?

Aromatherapy works by stimulating the smell receptors in the nose that send messages through the nervous system to the limbic system in the brain. This is the part of the brain that controls emotions. If you’ve ever had surgery where they placed a mask over your head and had you count down from 100 and you were out before you got to 97, that was the anesthetic being delivered via aromatherapy. It’s a powerful way to quickly change your mood and calm you down.

There are a myriad of ways that essential oils have helped me but calming stress, managing my emotions, and getting more restful sleep are at the top of the list. As a result, I’m able to have more energy and patience for myself, my business and my family. Not only that, but I’m better able to take stressful moments in stride and not allow them to take control of my day.  

Hint: not all essential oils are created equally. Make sure you’re using a high quality essential oil that is sourced sustainably, made from plants, and doesn’t contain any harmful pesticides or other toxic chemicals. Alright, now on to self-care for anti-aging skin – tip #2

2. Get more restful sleep

Ok, ok, we all know that sleep is super important and that we need it in order to be able to focus, better cope with stress, and have the energy we need to juggle all the demands of motherhood and business ownership. But did you know that it’s an important part of  having a strong immune system as well as tackling anti-aging? 

I know it can be tough to get enough sleep, but it’s also the quality of the sleep that you’re getting that is important. You know, the kind of sleep where you drift off quickly, have good dreams, don’t wake up in the middle of the night, or, if you do, you fall back to sleep quickly, and you wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and rested. I’m talking about the kind of sleep that bears get in their winter caves. Wouldn’t that be nice? 

There are a few simple steps that you can take to increase your chances of getting more restful sleep…

  • Stick to a sleep schedule

Make sure to get about 8 hours of sleep. So if you wake up at 6am every morning, make sure to go to bed by 10pm every night. If you’re more of a late riser, say 8pm, then you can go to bed by midnight. But if you have kids and they allow you to sleep all the way to 8am you’re my hero and can we trade? 

Stick to your schedule, don’t veer from it or allow peer pressure to chase you into a late night of binging Netflix and a box of wine on a Tuesday. If success in your business is a priority, then you must also make good sleep hygiene a priority. Of course, you can have vacations and the occasional weekend foray, but always remember that the more often you veer from your sleep schedule, the harder it will be to get back to it. 

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the evening

Caffeine is an obvious one, but did you know that large amounts of alcohol before bed can affect the quality of your sleep? Sure, alcohol can make you feel calmer and even sleepy, but as it is slowly metabolized by your liver while you’re sleeping, it can lead to disruptions in your sleep and decreased quality of sleep. 

Think about the last time you overdid it with alcohol and how tired you felt the next morning even if you went to bed by 10pm and woke up at 8am. 

So, again, if anti-aging as well as success in your business are a priority, then reducing the amount of alcohol you have in the evening must also be a priority so you can get more restful sleep!

  • Include physical activity in your daily routine

Yeah, yeah, exercise schmexercise. But I dare you to go for a 30 minute run, do a HIIT video, or take your sweaty butt to some hot yoga and watch your feelings of anxiousness calm down, your focus increase, and your sleep improve. I know how difficult it can be to prioritize exercise when juggling the mountains of laundry, screaming kids, and a million notifications in your email, but there is mounting research that shows how important exercise is for your sleep. 

Exercise helps to release endorphins, chemicals produced by your body to help relieve stress and discomfort in the muscles and joints. As a result, endorphins are often called the “feel good” chemicals. So you can see how exercising can play a huge role in your quality of sleep. How often do you lie in bed unable to fall asleep because of stress, worry, and racing thoughts? Exercise can help by relieving the stress that causes worry and racing thoughts. With reduced stress, you’ll be happier and your sleep quality will be better too.

However, since exercise releases endorphins which can increase brain activity, make sure you aren’t exercising within 2 hours of your bedtime or you may find it difficult to wind down.  

So, as a busy mom and business owner, how do you get exercise into your daily routine?

Let’s be honest here. It comes down to priorities. We make time for anything that is a priority, right? And what makes a priority in our minds is whether we identify ourselves as being someone who prioritizes the thing. Let me illustrate this…

A few years ago I was tired of having a messy looking bedroom all the time. I realized that the focal point of the room is the bed and if I made the bed, the entire room looked tidy. After a lifetime of not being a bed maker, I decided that had to change. I decided I wanted to be the type of woman who makes her bed every day. At first, it took saying “I’m the type of woman who makes her bed everyday.” to myself every morning. After some time I fully embodied that belief and now making my bed on a daily basis is something I do without even thinking about it. 

I invite you to make the decision to be the type of woman who prioritizes exercise so you can change your mindset around whether you have time for it (and maybe even make more money as a result because you’ll have so much more focus and energy). This may take waking up each day for a while saying to yourself “I’m the type of woman who exercises every day” before that belief is embodied deep in your subconscious. But once it is, you’ll find exercising daily to come quite easily.  

How else can you make sure to prioritize exercising?

Duh! Schedule it into your day! Ever heard the phrase ‘success is scheduled?’ It’s the same for exercise. Block time for it on your daily schedule and you’ll be more likely to do it.

If you need accountability in order to show up for your exercise, I suggest hiring a personal trainer or committing to go to some aerobic classes with a friend at the gym, or hiring me to help you figure out the unconscious thought patterns and self-defeating behaviors that get in the way of your success. It’s so much easier to show up for yourself when there is someone else counting on you to do it and holding you accountable for the goals you set for yourself.  

It doesn’t matter what kind of exercise you get as long as you get your heart rate up for more than 20 minutes and change up what you’re doing so all of the muscles in your body get worked out over the course of the week.
