Top Essential Oils for Positive Thinking

Almost everyone has heard this quote from Ghandi.  However, most people think this ‘change’ applies only to their actions.  Ghandi meant for us to change our thoughts as well because our thoughts decide our actions and our actions define us.  When we walk around being upbeat, an amazing thing happens; it rubs off on the people we come in contact with during the day, and becomes a positive ripple across the world!

Holding negative thoughts for long periods can have a seriously detrimental effect on our general health and well-being, as well as pulling down everyone around us! Continually worrying about your circumstances can lead to a range of physical ailments such as aching muscles in the neck, shoulder and back, digestive disturbances, allergies, headaches, insomnia, panic attacks, and eventually heart problems.

No one is free of problems, what matters is how we deal with them, and essential oils can help to support positive living.

Note:  The quality and purity of Essential Oils are vital to a positive experience.

Aromas each have a chemical structure all their own: One of the more distinct aromas from a pineapple is created by the presence of methyl butyrate. Roses smell lovely thanks to the compound geranyl acetate. The refreshing scent of lemongrass is due to the chemical compound citronellal.

Understanding aromatic compounds makes it easier to see why aromatherapy is such a perfect complement to other wellness strategies.  When we smell an essential oil (aromatherapy), the olfactory nerves trigger a response in the limbic system of the brain.  The limbic system controls memory, stress levels, emotions, blood pressure, breathing, and release of certain hormones.  Aromatic compounds can support your mood in a way that’s safe and all natural.

Remain Positive and Happy

Negative attitudes undermine our confidence, determination and willpower, finally robbing us of our stamina.  Try the following oils to help you cope throughout the day.
Basil promotes positivity, can encourage assertiveness and decisiveness.
Bergamot is calming and encourages determination and willpower.

Clary Sage* is used to maintain positive moods, and encourages calm and peace.

Frankincense elevates the spirit and the mind.  It encourages personal and spiritual growth, and clears up emotional exhaustion and depressed feelings.
Fennel is good to raise self-esteem and to ward off negative thoughts from other people. It also helps us to gain stamina and strength.
Geranium can support emotions, dissolves frustration and irritability and helps us to become more centered.  *try blending Bergamot and Geranium together in a diffuser or a bath.  Place a couple of drops on the temples and back of neck.
Grapefruit enlivens and energizes, brings about a feeling of joy, alertness and spontaneity, so this is a great oil to use in the morning for some ‘get-up-and-go’.
Lavender is a must to have at home. Its application is diverse.  Lavender supports our moods. Its action on the mind helps to clear away negative thoughts, worries and apprehension.  Lavender is an excellent oil to support better sleep.

Vetiver is a lesser known essential oil that has a soft, earthy scent. It encourages self-esteem and is very grounding.

Take Control/Adapt to Change

Uncertainty leads to stress and anxious feelings.  Worrying about things that are outside of our control will only make us sick.  The good news is, you do have control over your state of mind.  Develop a coping strategy by incorporating cypress, frankincense, or ylang ylang in to your life to support your moods and help you ‘let go’.

Cypress is a lovely oil for anyone feeling vulnerable and insecure because it offers strength and protection. It offers inner peace, balance and confidence, and can be useful when our will power needs a boost, whether it be sticking to a diet or overcoming an addiction.

Ylang Ylang with its sweet, intense floral perfume encourages calmness, joy and enthusiasm, as well as boosting self- confidence.

Lemongrass clears away feelings of self-doubt and regret encouraging a more balancing and calm attitude.

Peppermint is a good oil for encouraging regeneration and self-acceptance.  It increases sensitivity, perception and awareness.

If there are unwelcome changes happening in your life, try patchouli, sandalwood or vetiver.  These are the ideal essential oils to help instill more confidence which will help you take control. Sandalwood is known for lifting the mind to higher spiritual planes, bringing feelings of peace and tranquility.  Its scent has a balancing and grounding effect on the mind as it helps to ease feelings of inadequacy, lack of confidence, tension, stress and fear and also cut ties with the past and appease recurrent dreams.

Sleep Well

Use in the evening to unwind and prepare for a restful night’s sleep:  take a warm bath infused with essential oils before bed.  Add 2 drops of geranium, 2 drops of sandalwood and 1 drop of bergamot. This soothing bath will help calm down your thoughts and get you ready for a good nights sleep. Diffuse a blend of sandalwood, bergamot and clary sage next to your bed. This powerful relaxing blend works wonders for improving sleep. Roman Chamomile is excellent for bringing relaxation, inner peace, serenity and emotional stability, as it has a soothing effect on mind and body.  Place a couple of drops on the temples and back of neck at bed time.

By surrounding ourselves with these aromas we can affect the way we feel about ourselves and other people we come into contact with.   You will find that a tremendous peace, strength and courage can be instilled that leads you to a quiet state where simple solutions can often be found to what were previously seen as complicated problems.
