Spring Cleaning the Natural Way!

Are you thinking about spring cleaning?  It’s that time of year again!  The sun is shining, birds are chirping, and it’s warm enough out to open your windows and let some fresh air in!  Maybe you’ve begun taking out your sponges, spray bottles, face masks and rubber gloves to get going with the scrubbing.  You may be looking into a spring cleaning detox or cleansing program, and, hopefully, you’re tossing out your more-than-six-months old personal care products.  Remember:  when you’re spring cleaning with toxic chemicals, you and your kids are breathing them in to your lungs and it gets into your blood stream; AND anything you put on your skin (read: personal care products) goes directly into your blood stream too.   You may want to think about getting rid of those store-bought toxic-chemical-laced cleaners and personal care products and opting for an all-natural option infused with essential oils.   It might surprise you learn that you can make your own all-natural  cleaners quite easily and inexpensively, AND you won’t need those rubber gloves or face masks!

Did you know commercial household cleaner and self-care product companies are not required to label the ingredients clearly and completely?  Many on the market contain chemicals such as parabens, formaldehyde, chloroform, dioxade, quarternary ammonium, and much more!  Health concerns associated with such chemicals are numerous and, frankly, scary.  It’s important to remember that just because a label says “natural” it doesn’t necessarily mean non-toxic.  I’m not going to get into all the ways commercial household cleaners and personal care products can harm you and your children.  If you want to read more about that topic, here’s a link to the Environmental Working Group’s discussion on household cleaners and the myths of cosmetic safety.

What I do want to talk about is how important it is to take chemicals out of your home as much as is possible because these chemicals build up in your body, in your children’s bodies, wreaking havoc on the body’s systems.   Yes, the liver and kidneys are made to filter out toxins to protect the body, BUT you’re exposed to more chemicals in ONE DAY than your grandparents were in an entire year!  Your filtering organs are over-taxed and just can’t handle the sheer volume of crud that is now flowing through your system.

Why not switch to all-natural, non-toxic cleaners and personal care products made with essential oils or make your own?

My favorite essential oils for spring cleaning are wild orange, lemon, and lime.  These not only add a wonderful (note: 100% natural) fragrance, they also add their own versatile therapeutic benefits, and have powerful cleansing properties.  There’s nothing a little elbow grease, baking soda, white vinegar, and water can’t handle when mixed with essential oils.   Try mixing water with lemon essential oil and see it clean streaks off of your windows!  Here are a couple easy, inexpensive, and effective DIY spring cleaning recipes…
